Charles Richard Hails, was born in Sudbury, Middlesex, Ma. He moved with his parents to Santa Barbara, Ca. in 1873. He was a farmer in Goleta when he met and married Mary Pearl Hamilton, who was a school teacher at the Cathedral Oaks School in Goleta. In 1881, Charles owned seventeen acres of hill land. He also had 70 acres of grazing land at the foot of the Old San Marcos Pass rd. On the property was a huge Bay Tree, said to be the biggest in the world. The tree is still there (1985) though it has struggled for survival due to the land having so much paving. (It is now a housing development). Charles played the violin. His favorite flower was the violet. Charles and Mary had three sons: Charles Hamilton, Raymond Richard and Alan Walter.
