Harry Ward, Grand Lake resident for 29 years, died while vacationing with two of his sons, Steve and Mike. Ward, in Maui, Hawaii. During his sleep, Harry departed this life to be with the Lord, early in the morning on May 17, 2002.

Harry was born Sept. 9, 1931 in Blackwell, Okla., the son of Vernon and Bernice Ward. He received his BA in music education from Oklahoma A&M and furthered his education in Las Vegas, N.M.

Harry served in the U.S. Army, and later followed his heart in music, which led him in 1960 to become the band director in Guymon, Okla. There he led his bands to become some of the most honored bands ever in Oklahoma.

In 1972 Harry moved to Walden, Colo. where he directed the high school band. In 1973 he moved to Grand Lake, Colorado where he became the band director at Middle Park High School. There he led Middle Park bands to unprecedented success. Harry was loved dearly by many of his students and his influence put many on a path to musical careers.

He retired from teaching in 1983 and began a second career in real estate. Harry became the managing broker for Remax Resorts of Grand County in Grand Lake. In 1997 Harry retired and continued enjoying life with his wife, family, friends, music, horses, hunting, dogs and snowmobiles.

For the last 15 years of his life, the most important thing to Harry was glorifying God. To this end, he used his music in Christian service by leading praise music as a member at Winter Park Christian Center and at Stillwater Community Chapel. Harry united the Ward family by gathering his children and grandchildren yearly for a great time of fellowship and reunions. he was deeply devoted and committed to God, his wife and family.

Harry is survived by his wife of 30 years, Maxine, one brother, one sister, four children, 21 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, five step-children and seven step-grandchildren.

He is survived by three sons: Steve Ward, father of 10, and his wife Susan, of Etowah, Tenn.; Jerry War, father of four, and his wife Renee of Edmond, Okla; and Mike Ward, father of three.
