Ruth D. Acklen, 90, of Grants Pass died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Newman United Methodist Church, with Brett Strobel, pastor, officiating. Private interment will be at the Masonic Cemetery. Southern Oregon Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions may be made to Newman United Methodist Church, 132 N.E. B St., Grants Pass, OR 97526; or to the Jerry Acklen Diabetes Health Association, P.O. Box 741, Grants Pass, OR 97526; or to Make Today Count in care of Oak Lane Retirement Center, 727 S.W. Rogue River Ave., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

Acklen was born Dec. 7, 1914, in Ione. She attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) for two years. On Sept. 7, 1940, in Seattle, she married Gerald G. Acklen, who died before her. She worked in the newsroom of the Grants Pass Daily Courier and retired in December 1984. From 1981 to 1982, she was in "Who's Who of American Women." In 1982, she was BPW Woman of the Year, and in 1991, she was voted the Zonta Community Woman of Achievement.

She was a member of Newman United Methodist Church, the Jerry Acklen Diabetes Health Association, Make Today Count, and the Lovejoy Hospice Board of Directors, for which she served as secretary.

Survivors include two sons, G. Craig Acklen of Bangor, Pa., and Daniel W. Acklen of Grants Pass; two daughters, Ruthann de la Vega of Palm Springs, Calif., and Linda Chieffo of Fanwood, N.J.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
