Bradford C. Shuler, age 96, died Saturday, April 6, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

When he was 18, Shuler's father brought him and the family from Grayson County to Teas on horseback and in wagons. They were pursuing work at the old extract plant.

Shuler worked at the plant until it burned down in the mid-1920's. Afterward, he earned a living doing farm work and by becoming a master carpenter. Shuler has built homes all over Smyth County.

He was known in Rye Valley for his sharp wit and storytelling ability. He even took up roller skating at the age of 50. In his later years, Shuler developed a love for a rather large flock of domesticated ducks, which showed up at his house on the South Fork every morning, like clockwork.

A lifelong Republican, Shuler took advantage of every opportunity to exercise his right to vote. In 1994, Shuler was still able to make it out to the Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department to cast his vote. Last year, he used an absentee ballot for the first time ever.

He is survived by one daughter, Grace Hutton of Sugar Grove; three sons, Earl Shuler of Saltville, Raymond Shuler of Chilhowie, and D. C. Shuler of Sugar Grove; two sisters, Maude Davis and Lettie Sheets, both of Sugar Grove; four stepdaughters, Gay Hart of Marion, Betty Heffinger of Sharpsburg, N.C., Dorothy Berry of Baltimore, Md, and Addie Page of Guttenberg, N.J.; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Burial followed in Shuler Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
