BURN VICTIM DIES IN CHICAGO - Injuries and burns, coupled with complications, caused the death today in Presbyterian Hospital, Chicago, of Robert Aurand, 34, of 749 Navajo Dr. Carpentersville, who was injured March 27 in the collapse and fire of a catwalk and gravel hopper at the Arcole Midwest Corp pit on Algonquin and Carpentersville blacktop road. Aurand was pinned under debris which was ignited by an overturned kerosene salamander and he suffered first and second degree burns over approximately 60 percent of his body. Aurand was transferred to Chicago nine days after the accident and was making satisfactory progress from the skin grafting operations until two weeks ago, when he suffered a heart attack. Surgeons opened up the chest and massaged his heart until it resumed beating, but Aurand failed to rally from the ordeal and died early today.
Anthony (Tony) Pace, 48, of East Dundee, was killed in the accident and Carl Didlinger of Dundee route 2, escaped with leg bruises and minor burns. The three men were on a catwalk about the hopper when a truck pulled in to be loaded. The hopper collapsed, wrecking the catwalk and dropped the men and the lighted salamander into the debris. Pace was crushed between two heavy timbers and was dead when extricated three hours later. Aurands foot was pinned by another timber and he was severely burned before being rescued. Aurand was born in Dundee, August 19, 1923 and resided in this area all of his life, except for four years in Navel Service aboard a submarine chaser during WWII. He was a member of the Elgin Moose lodge. In addition to the widow, the former Ella Mae Wilke, he is survived by three children, his parents, George and Stella Aurand; three brothers, Theron, Roy James and George Donald Aurand, and two sisters, Mrs. Donna Foley and Mrs. Carol Coulson all of Elgin. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Tuesday at the Stout Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Bush, pastor of the Open Bible Church, Carpentersville, will officiate and burial will be in the Lake Street Memorial Park Cemetery. [Unknown newspaper - 1957]
