Basil E. Bertram, 82, a resident of New Castle went to be with Jesus Monday morning, August 31, 2009 at the Waters of New Castle. He was born May 2, 1927 in Anderson to the late Ellis and Stella (Fairchild) Bertram.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, he had served during the Korean War. Mr. Bertram retired from Chrysler Corp. in 1980 after over 32 years of service. He was previously employed by the city of New Castle as park superintendent and First Presbyterian Church where he was custodian. He was a member of the American Legion and previously attended the Eastside United Brethren Church which he had helped build. He enjoyed planting trees, gardening and working on his tractor.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years: Alice (Ferguson) Bertram; two daughters: Sharon (husband: Charles Gary) Bell of Middletown and Pat (husband: David) Harry of Franklin; a son: Terry D. Bertram of New Castle; seven grandchildren: Cindy K. Smith, Charles Gary Bell II, Candy (husband: Bryan) Smith, Kelli (husband: Pete) Turlo, Patrick Harry, Josh Bertram and Nikki (husband: Jeremy) Ashby; eleven great grandchildren; five sisters: Carolyn Riley of Arizona, Agatha Zambos of Middletown, Gloria Riddle of New Castle, Audrey Duncan of Anderson and Vicky Webb of New Castle; a brother: Sammy "Ellis, Jr." Bertram of Tennessee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters: Gerald and Cletus Bertram, Marilyn Laurie and Charlotte Overton.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 4, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, New Castle with Rev. Charles Gary Bell officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and the VFW.
