James Aquilla Painter, age 76, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Saturday, August 29, 2009 at his residence.

He was born July 2, 1933 in Maurytown, Va., a son of the late Luther L. and Cora Goldie Miller Painter. James was a retired service manager for Capitol Camper Sales in Vienna, Va. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam Era. He was Baptist by faith and a volunteer for the Salvation Army. A son, Darrell Scott "Scotty" Painter; two brothers, Wayne and Harold Painter; two sisters, Christine Courtney Wiseman and Thelma Bursey; his in-laws, Edmond T. and Maudie Allen Dean and brothers-in-law, Larry and Doug Dean, also preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Vivian Dean Painter; two daughters, Vicky Elaine Garrett and husband, Steve of Apache Junction, Ariz. and Courtney Elizabeth Reeves and husband, William of Lavalette, W.Va.; two sons, Michael Martin Painter of Apache Junction, Ariz., Matthew Allen Painter and wife, Stephanie, Louisa, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Carleen Painter of Stafford, Va.; a sister, Ginny Rose Davis and husband, Bill of Winchester, Va.; seven grandchildren, AET1 Steven James Garrett and wife, Ashley of Kodiak, Ark., Sgt. Travis William Garrett and wife, Jenny with the Second Batalion, Fifth Marines of Camp Pendleton, Calif., Airman First Class Jessica Shannon Garrett of Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.; Nicole Marie Painter of Stafford, Va., William James "Jimmy" Reeves of Lavalette, W.Va., Timothy Aquilla Painter of Louisa, Va.; Serena Courtney Reeves of Lavalette, W.Va.; four great-grandchildren, Logan KaiGarrett, Cooper Kakoa Garrett, Dylan Michael Garrett, Caleb Daniel Garrett; two sisters-in-law, Judy Dean of Prichard, W.Va., Sharon K. Dean of Huntington, W.Va.; three brothers-in-law, Edmond Roger Dean, Glen Eldridge Dean, Allen Henry Dean and wife, Virginia, all of Huntington, W.Va. and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Morris Funeral Home of Wayne, West Virginia. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, W.Va., by Pastor Ivan Asbury. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Wayne.
