On August 27, 2009, our beautiful, smiling Heidi went to see her Jesus at the young age of 18. Heidi Lynn Childs was born on December 9, 1990, in Abingdon. She was currently residing in Forest with her family.

Heidi was found by a passer-by around 8am in the parking area at Caldwell Fields - a campground popular with Virginia Tech students - located about 15 miles from campus in northern Montgomery County. She was found dead, apparently shot, along with her friend David Lee Metzler.

David's body was found inside a car; Heidi's body was found on the ground outside the vehicle. No weapon was found at the scene, and authorities are investigating the shootings as a double homicide.

Heidi was a sophomore at Virginia Tech as a bio-chemistry major with plans to become a physician's assistant. She was an honor student and involved in many campus activities, especially Campus Crusade for Christ. Most of all, she loved her Lord Jesus Christ, and this was evident in everything she did.

Heidi was one of eight children of an aviation sergeant with the Virginia State Police. She is survived by her parents, Laura and Don Childs; five sisters, Kristen C. Rodriguez, Emily C. Dunn, Katelyn, Anna Grace and Abigail; two brothers, Paul and Andrew, two brothers-in-law, Luis Rodriguez and Michael Dunn; one sister-in-law, Ariel Childs; two nieces, Gabriella Rodriguez and Elayna Childs, who she loved and adored; and her grandparents, Jim and Roylleen Brown, of Hampton.

The family received friends from 3pm – 6pm on Sunday, August 30, 2009, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A funeral service was conducted at 3pm on Monday, August 31, 2009, at Heritage Baptist Church, with Dr. F. Gerald Kroll and Pastor Kent Gregory officiating. Interment Virginia Memorial Park.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, assisted the family.
