Her family resided in Marion County until 1901, then moved to Jasper County, Iowa, for 5 years. The family moved to Marshall County, Minnesota, for 2 years, before moving back to Marion County in 1908.
Rosa Lois Maddy married Alfred Martin McVay on October 26, 1912, in Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa. Lois and Mart had two sons: Audrey Martin and Virgil Cooper.
Mart managed a Co-op business for six years (around 1920-1926) in the I. O. O. F. building (International Order of Odd Fellows).
The family moved to a house in Tracy in 1925. Mart and Lois had a General Merchandise Store there during the Depression. Lois was the bookkeeper. Their store was in the Smith Building, from 1926 until 1932, when it was destroyed by fire.
The four McVays, Mart, Lois, Audrey, and Virgil, moved to a farm southeast of Luther (on the current 280th Street), in January of 1937, which they rented until 1956. Lois canned meat, vegetables, and condiments extensively while on the farm. She made food daily in a black iron skillet for the dogs, using food scraps.
Lois was a member of the DAR, the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mart had three strokes, so he retired from farming. On November 1, 1956, Mart and Lois moved to Luther into a house that they owned, on the southwest corner of 3rd and Worth Streets. Both the farm and house in town are no longer there.
Rosa Lois Maddy McVay passed away at home in Luther early Sunday morning on October 13, 1960. Her funeral was at the Luther Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 16, 1960. Lois had suffered from heart disease since 1941 and requested that memorials be given to the Heart Fund.
