Alfred Martin McVay was born on May 8, 1889, the oldest of 4 children of Hiram Reese McVay and Olivia (Cooper) McVay, in a log cabin in Tracy, Iowa, where the water tower now stands.

He married Rosa Lois Maddy on October 26, 1912, in Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa. They were the parents of 2 sons, Audrey Martin McVay and Virgil Cooper McVay.

Mart was a merchant and farmer. He managed a Co-op business for 6 years (around 1920-1926) in the I. O. O. F. Building (International Order of Odd Fellows).

The family moved to a house in Tracy in 1925. Mart and Lois had a General Merchandise Store there during the Depression. Their store was in the Smith Building, from 1926 until 1932, when it was destroyed by fire. Mart was also a Constable; he carried a gun to take money from the store to the bank. Mart served as a Sunday School Superintendent of the Methodist Church in Tracy.

The 4 McVays, Mart, Lois, Audrey, and Virgil, moved to a farm southeast of Luther on the current 280th St. which they rented and farmed from 1937-1956. Mart had 3 strokes, so he retired. On November 1, 1956, Mart and Lois moved into a house that they owned in Luther on the southwest corner of 3rd and Worth Streets. Both the farm and house in town are no longer there.

Mart passed away at home in Luther on August 21, 1963. His funeral was at the Luther Methodist Church.
