Audrey Martin McVay was born on October 26, 1917, in Harvey, Iowa, the son of Alfred Martin and Rosa Lois Maddy McVay. Harvey was a very active town with a brick factory and a railroad roundhouse. 


He attended grade school and most of high school in Tracy, Iowa, then moved in January 1937 with his parents and brother to a farm southeast of Luther, Iowa. He graduated from Luther High School in 1937.


Audrey Martin McVay married Mae Ione Lantz in 1942 at Princeton, Missouri. They had 2 daughters, Sandra Louise and Margaret Ann; and 1 son, James Ronald.


Audrey worked at the Luther Co-op Elevator for 11 years. Then he was the manager of the Dunlap-Woodbine Co-op Elevators for 2 years before becoming a distributor for Petersen Livestock Watering Systems for 21 years.


Audrey was known for his love of history and his remarkable ability to retain family genealogy. He was Past President of the Boone County (Iowa) Historical Society and of the Boone County Genealogical Society. The RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) in Boone named an award in his honor. He spent a lot of time gathering information for the "Trails Tales" magazine, published by the Boone County Historical Society. He was also a member of the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad and the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum. He loved playing guitar and harmonica in bands that entertained at area nursing homes.


Audrey and Mae lived in Luther from 1958 to 1982, then moved to Madrid, Iowa. Audrey later retired from the Woodward State Hospital-School as a night Resident Treatment Worker.


Audrey Martin McVay passed away on Sunday, July 2, 1995, in a hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.


Arrangements were by and Visitation was at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid, Iowa. Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 6, 1995, at Eternal Life Church in Luther, formerly the Luther Methodist Church.
