Lyle Everett Hurley was born on September 12, 1928, in Madrid, Iowa, the son of William Benjamin Hurley and Susie Elizabeth Hynes Hurley.

Lyle served in the United States Army in the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart.

He married Norene McVay at the Luther Methodist Church on July 1, 1952, upon returning from the Korean War. They had 2 sons, Lynn and Lowell.

Lyle and Norene farmed just outside of Luther in Boone County, Iowa.
They were longtime supporters of Iowa State University Basketball. They were members of the Luther Methodist Church and later, the First United Methodist Church in Boone. Lyle worked for Iowa State University in Ames, retiring in 1990.

Lyle passed away on February 24, 2003, in Madrid, Iowa, at age 74. He is survived by his wife, Norene; two sons, Lynn Hurley and Lowell (Debbie) Hurley, both of Boone, Iowa; and grandchildren: Clint (Jamie) Hurley, Tanya Hurley, Erin (Jeremey) Shuey, Matthew Hurley, and Kyle Hurley. He was predeceased by his parents and by his siblings: Mary Florence Pies, Nina Grace Rose, Eldon Charles Hurley, and Donald William Hurley.
