John, Jr was the first son born to John William Rose and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Laney. When John was 2 1/2 his father, John Sr, died in a Union Army Military Prison. He married Martha Elizabeth Wade, Nov 15, 1883.

John learned telegrapy as a teen and at age 19 was employed by the Frisco Railroad in charge of a station. He worked at this job for the next 6 years and then went into partnership and opened a mercantile, Rose and Thurman General Store at Republic, Missouri. He was also Postmaster at the Republic Post Office from May 25, 1885 until June, 1889. John later operated a book store in Springfield, Missouri. He also opened a book store in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, putting his son Jeremiah in charge. John was a Democrat, belonged to the Methodist Church and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
