Florence Lucille was born to Marvin Earnest Barrett and Mildred Inez Moore
Barrett.
She had four brothers: Leon, Wesley, Kenneth and Robert.
Florence (17), her best friend Betty Loraine Garver (16), James Buzzard (17)
and Gene Hallock (19) were heading to Grand Junction from Olathe on the
night of their junior-senior prom. Flossie would graduate in May.
There was a truck parked on the Kannah Creek Bridge on U.S. Hwy 50, about
14 miles south of Grand Junction. The driver of the truck claimed he had a dead
battery and left the truck; he was hauling furniture in the truck bed. The driver
of the truck also said he had placed a flare beside his truck and another about
150 feet south of the bridge.
The driver also stated he was standing between his truck and the flare when he
tried to flag down the car that was coming upon him very fast. He said he could
see that the driver of the sedan wasn't going to pass his truck but was headed
straight for it; he ran to the opposite side of the road when he heard the colossal
crash of the sedan hitting his truck.
The car struck the left rear corner of the truck, ramming the rear axle forward;
the hood and windshield on the car were forced under the parked truck.
Both boys were unconscious and taken immediately to the hospital and
survived; they had severe concussions and Mr. Hallock had a broken hand.
Flossie and Betty Loraine Garver died upon impact.
