Lawrence Eugene Gray, 73, of Eagle, Idaho, and Sterling, Alaska, entered into rest on April 24, 2009, at his home in Eagle, with his family by his side. Larry was born on Jan. 20, 1936, in Boise to Loren Elden and Clysta Mayes Gray.

After graduating from Meridian High School and Boise Junior College, Larry married Goldie Smith on May 20, 1956, and the first years of their marriage were spent at Mountain Home Air Force base where Larry served as a military policeman and their first daughter Tami was born. After leaving the Air Force, Larry and Goldie moved to Nampa and welcomed their second daughter Shelly, and the Grays founded Gray Construction. They operated the company until 1972, when Larry went into partnership with his father, Elden Gray, in G & B Redi-Mix. Larry and Goldie enjoyed traveling with their friends, the Heyrends, going south for the winters, horseback riding and snowmobiling at the cabin they built. Larry often indulged in one of his favorite pastimes – relentlessly teasing his grandchildren.

Following Goldie's passing in April 1994, Larry remained President of G & B Redi-Mix until his retirement in 1995. In June 1996, Larry married JoAnn Brubaker. The two divided their time between Hawaii, Alaska and Idaho, and Larry was able to pursue his wide variety of interests. Larry enjoyed fishing on all types of water – especially on Alaska's Kenai River – and also loved bear hunting, sea kayaking, snorkeling and whale watching. A master woodworker, Larry created log benches, ukuleles, Hawaiian paddles, flutes and Indian drums. Larry honored his Cherokee Indian heritage in many of his creations. Larry and JoAnn wintered in Idaho to be near family, making their home in Eagle. It also allowed Larry to closely follow his beloved Boise Broncos. He was a lifetime member of the Bronco Athletic Association. Larry influenced the lives of his family and friends tremendously. His work ethic, his passion for his Cherokee heritage, and his ability to live life to the fullest have all made their mark on Larry's family.

Larry is survived by his wife of 12 years, JoAnn Brubaker Gray (Eagle, Idaho and Sterling, Alaska); his daughters, Tami DeBoer (Star, Idaho) and Shelly Fisher (Middleton, Idaho), his son-in-law Dave Fisher (Middleton); his step-children Robert and Vicki McConnell (Arock, Ore.), Michael McConnell (Boise, Idaho); his grandchildren Matt and Toni DeBoer ( Star, Idaho), Shaun and Chelsie Natwick (Middleton), Goldie and Brandon Wells (Boise), Erik, Carlie and Kimberly Fisher (Middleton); his great-grandchildren Jaiden and Keaton Unger, Parker DeBoer, Darian and Gavin Hodges, Izzy Natwick, Gideon and Ammon Wells.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Goldie Smith Gray; his parents, Elden and Clysta Gray; his sister, Marilyn Marks; and his grandson, Jordan Fisher.

A celebration of Larry's life will be held at Summers Funeral Home, 3629 E. Ustick Road, Meridian at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2. Interment will immediately follow the service at the Meridian Cemetery. Family and friends may attend the viewing from 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Summers Funeral Home in Meridian.
