Lonnie Bostrom, 48-year-old from Meridian, Idaho, was driving his 1953 Kaiser Henry J modified for drag racing, named "Henry VIII", on the quarter-mile paved dragstrip of Firebird Raceway, located southeast of Emmett, Idaho, on Saturday, 19 June 1999.

He had just completed a qualifying round in the NHRA Sportsman class of the Gold Cup season series, in front of hundreds of fans when his car veered to the left and rolled over about a dozen times, just after crossing the finish line, at a speed of 119 mi/h (191.47 km/h). The emergency crews who arrived to the place of accident a few seconds later, found the roll cage of Lonnie Bostrom' car still intact and the driver trapped in the wreckage. Death was almost instantaneous.

An investigation by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) did not determine whether mechanical failure contributed to the accident. This was reported to be the third fatal accident at the dragstrip, since Firebird Raceway was opened in 1967.

A drag racer since many years, Lonnie Bostrom was an electronic technician by occupation, employed at Hewlett Packard Co. His wife, Cathy Lee, and one of his four children, Nick, aged 23, were at the track and witnessed the accident. Burial was in Meridian Cemetery, Meridian, Ada County, Idaho.
