Harry was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to William Frederick Bode and Mary Elizabeth Seifert.

Harry served as a private in U.S. Army Quartermaster Co. 32 during World War I. He was stationed at a detention camp in Bowie, Texas. After the War, Harry owned a butcher shop in St. Joseph.

Harry was married to Gertrude Haight in 1923 in St. Joseph, and they had a son, Harry, Jr. She died from complications due to childbirth.
