He was the son of John Deboe Hodge and Agnes Shaw. He served during the Revolutionary War and was in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on 15 March 1781 as a Captain under General Greene and where he was severely wounded by a Tory. He may have served instead in the Battle of Lindley's Mill on 12th or 13th of September 1781 at Cane Creek, North Carolina. Or he may have served in both battles; it is unclear. The Guilford Courthouse National Military Park states: "a Joseph Hodge is listed as a possible participant in that battle as researched by Dr. Zebulon L. Bowman of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina." Dr. Bowman, unfortunately, does not give his source. Joseph married Euphemia Agnew circa 1781/1782 in Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina. He received a land grant for land in Sumner County, Tennessee for his military service and his family moved there.
