As a youth in Grayling, Michigan, he was a promising young artist, but he set his sights on attending West Point, and he won the appointment over 20 other applicants. The 20th regiment of Engineers arrived in France at the end of 1917 and was sent immediately to the front. They worked through the winter constructing railroads, sidings and icehouses. During this time, Major Hartwick fell ill with what is believed to be pneumonia. During his recover in March 1918 he contracted cerebro-spinal meningitis and died of this disease on March 31, 1918 in Dax, France. Major Hartwick was buried at Talance Cemetery in Bordeaux. In 1920, his remains were returned to the United States and were reburied at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit Michigan.
