WATERBURY — Mrs. Carolene C. (Harvey) Watts, 102, of Prospect Street, entered the realm of eternal rest from her home on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009.

Mrs. Watts was born May 22, 1907, in Pittsburgh, Pa., daughter of the late Rev. Clem A. Harvey, founder of Zion Baptist Church in Waterbury, Conn., and the late Laura (Ford) Harvey. She was the wife of the late Elisha J. Watts and the mother of five girls and two boys.

Mrs. Watts was a longtime resident of Waterbury. She was a graduate of Crosby High School, class of 1925. She was employed at Chase Metal Works during World War II. Mrs.

Watts was also employed at the Immaculate Conception Church for 42 years.

Mrs. Watts was active in numerous religious, civic and political organizations in the Waterbury area.

She was a devoted and dedicated member of Zion Baptist Church.

Mrs. Watts was the first female trustee and former chairwoman of the trustee board, a former member of the senior choir, an honorary member of the adult Mass choir, a member and former treasurer of the Pilgrim Missionary Society, a member of the Pastor's Aid Ministry of which she served as president for 33 years, and a member of the Outreach Ministry. Mrs. Watts served as the financial secretary of the Zion Baptist Church for more than 50 years as well as secretary of the Zion Baptist Joint Board.

She was the president of the Waterbury Unit of Church Women United for six years and chairwoman of the Conn. State Northwest District.

Mrs. Watts was a member of the Waterbury Area Council of Churches and served on the Soup Kitchen Committee. She was actively involved in the political/civic arena of Waterbury, a former member of the steering committee and citizen board of the Model City Program under whose guidance the Martin Luther King Jr. Park was established. Mrs. Watts served five years on the executive board of the Waterbury Nutrition Board. She was a voting member of the United Way.

Mrs. Watts served as the "1986 Mayor For A Day" in the City of Waterbury. She was a former member of the Mayor's Youth Task Force Committee. Mrs. Watts served two years as a member of the Town Committee representing the 72nd District of the City of Waterbury.

She was a member of the executive board of the Black Democratic Club and a former member of the steering committee of the Waterbury Human Rights Committee. Mrs. Watts served five years as a member of the board of directors of New Opportunities of Waterbury Inc., was a charter member of W.O.W. Neighborhood Group, and served nine years as president of the Waterbury Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. where she was a life member.

Mrs. Watts was the former president of the CT State Association of Colored Women's Clubs Inc., and was the recipient of numerous awards and plaques from many prestigious local, state and national organizations.

Her survivors include Valdoris (Albert) Justice, Maxine Watts, Beverly Watts and Harvey Watts, all of Waterbury, Conn., and Ledonia Gray of Southington, Conn. She is survived by grandchildren, Bruce Justice of Newport News, Va., Derrick Gray of Southington, Conn., Richard Owens of Winston Salem, N.C., Harvey Chapman of Atlanta, Ga., Vanessa Harvey of Los Angeles, Calif., Sherod Blizzard and Judson Watts II, both of Waterbury; 11 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Watts was predeceased by two children, Jeanette Watts and Judson Watts; two sisters, Maybelle Ward and Louise Vann, a granddaughter, Gloria Yates-Lee, a daughter-in-law, Vivian Watts, and a son-in-law, Charles Gray.

Home-going service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at Zion Baptist Church, 137 Pearl St., Waterbury. Calling hours are 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at the church. Burial in New Pine Grove Cemetery.
