ROCKY BOY — Joseph Robert "Jose" Arkinson Jr., 51, a retired logger, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at a Havre care facility of cancer.

Joe was born Nov. 2, 1950 to Joseph Robert and Teresa (Small) Arkinson Sr. in a teepee in Roberts, Idaho. He attended schools at Rocky Boy. In 1960, Teresa died. His uncle and aunt, James and Madeline Oats, raised him.

Joe was drafted by the Army infantry from 1969 through 1971. He served his country in Vietnam. He received a sharpshooter badge with the auto rifle bar and the marksman badge with the rifle bar. He was further authorized to receive the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation badge. He was honorably discharged.

In 1979, Joe married Debbie Stump at Rocky Boy. To this union, five children were born. The couple later divorced.

His hobbies included sketching people, animals, nature, etc. He also enjoyed playing machines, cribbage, listening to the oldies on the radio. Joe will be missed by his family and friends, especially his mischievous sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Robert and Teresa Arkinson Sr.; uncle, James Oats; brother, Leland.

Survivors include his sisters, Marcella Knaub of Sheridan, Wyo., Joanne Williams of Billings, Cynthia Schmockel of Box Elder, Sharon Schmockel of Havre, Cora Arkinson of Cut Bank, Donna Arkinson of Oklahoma; brothers, Bill Schmockel of Havre, Tom Arkinson of Valier, Victor Arkinson of Billings; children, Teresa Hinkle Rangel of Manassas, Va., Daniel Stump, Amber Arkinson, Joshua Arkinson, Gabriel Arkinson, Joseph Arkinson, Sharla Chandler, all of Rocky Boy; two grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
