"He was called Tarance in 1820 Overton County, Tennessee census; Terence in 1830 Cumberland County, Kentucky census; C.T. in 1840 Clinton County, Kentucky census; and Carter T. in 1850 and 1860 Wayne County Kentucky census. In 1815 Carter T Dalton was granted 124 acres on Caney Creek in what was then Cumberland and later became Clinton County, Kentucky near Wayne County Kentucky line. The "Dalton Newsletter" says Carter was in Overland County in 1813 and that he was in Cumberland County in 1813 where he and Betty were members of Clear Fork Baptist Church. It isn't clear which Carter T., but it is likely that Carter was the one in Overton county. He was in Overton County in 1820, Cumberland County in 1830, in Clinton County in 1840 (Clinton was formed in 1836 from parts of Cumberland and Wayne), and moved to Wayne County in 1842. The 131 acre farm he bought there is still owned and occupied by his descentants, Flora E. Bertram and Robert E Bertram of Sunnybrook. The present house was built by Carter T.'s son Carter Dee in 1905 of hand dressed poplar lumber. A smaller building with a cellar stands behind the main house and was probably slave quarters. The 1860 Slave Schedule shows Carter T. owning three slaves: a 40 year old male; a 20 year old female;and a 4 year old male. Carter T and Esther had 10 children."
