Glenn J. Darst

Glenn J. Darst, 93, Medford, formerly of Superior, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at Our House Assisted Living, Medford.

He was born in Spring Valley, Minn., on May 23, 1914, the son of Ernest and Ruby (Tierney) Darst.

As a young child, his family moved to Superior. He attended Cathedral School, graduated from the former Superior State Teachers College and earned a master's degree in educational administration at UW-Madison before teaching math and German for four years.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941. During World War II, while stationed in the South Pacific, he met his future wife, Margaret "Peg", a lieutenant in the Navy Nurse Corps.
Glenn served 21 years in communications and electronics before retiring in 1962 with the rank of commander. He returned to Superior where he joined his father in the McCabe Insurance and Real Estate Agency.

He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church. He served on the Parish Council, the Catholic Charities Board, and various Cathedral School committees. He volunteered at St. Francis Nursing Home and sang in the Cathedral Choir until his 92nd year.

He was an active supporter of the Chamber of Commerce, the Sierra Club, the Boy Scouts of America, Retired Officers' Association and Habitat for Humanity. Glenn had lived in Superior for 45 years before recently moving to Medford.
Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 1984; his brother, Lowell in 1962; his father, Ernest; mother, Ruby; and stepmother, Anne.

He is survived by his children, Greta Ann (John) Murray, Medford, Michael, Miami, Fla., Mary Glenn (Steve) Russ, Stetsonville, Wis., and Saralee (Patrick) Anderson, Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren, Chantal (Matt) McGee, Steven (Betsy) Russ, Laura Jeanne (Jason) Powless, Sam (Amy) Russ, Ron (Nicole) Russ, Rozalyn (Bart) Gould, Margaret Anderson, Amanda Russ, Tyler Russ and Jordan Anderson; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces, Kathy (John) Berchild and Susan (Alan) Horvath; nephews, Jim (Joyce) Darst and Tom Darst; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Visitation begins at noon Tuesday at Cathedral of Christ the King Church, Superior and continues until the 1:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior, with full military honors.

A tuition assistance scholarship in Glenn's name has been established at Cathedral School. Donations may be sent to 1419 Baxter Ave., Superior, WI 54880.

The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Ave., Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
