From obituary and family history:

Born and raised in Indiana. In Dec. 1848, at 17 years of age, he converted, and a year later, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. Came to IA, by horseback, Sept. 14, 1852. Carried gold to buy land in Monroe County from the government. Returned home to Indiana. Jacob came back to Iowa in 1854, with his parents and settled near Attica, Marion County.

After his May 24, 1855, marriage to Calinda Kelsey, of Attica, they lived on the land which he had purchased in Monroe Co. until March, 1871, when they moved 3 miles N of Attica, 6 miles SE of Knoxville.

Jacob was a carpenter and cabinet maker, much in demand at house and barn raisings, and was the only source of coffins for some years. He was on the Attica School Board and was a Charter (founding) member of the Primitive Methodist Church in Knoxville.

They lived near Attica until Nov. 18, 1895, when he retired from farming, then moved into Knoxville, where he built a large house. They were married 61 years until Calinda’s death, Apr. 19, 1917.
5 children. Died at the home of his son, Aaron, in South Knoxville, aged 89 yrs., 3 mo., and 29 days. He left a considerable sum of money to Zion Cemetery, for its care.
