Opposing the recent German counter-offensive on the western front, four additional Rockford men became casualties according to notification received by their families from the war department. The latest victims, including one killed and three missing in action are:
Pfc. John T. Garner, Jr., 19, killed in action Dec. 30 in Belgium.....
Garner, an infantry man, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Garner, North Church street. Graduated in June, 1943, from West high school where he was a member of the high school and symphony orchestras, he was inducted into the army the following July 3 at Camp Grant.
The youth received his basic training at Camp Fannin, Tex., and then attended Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge as a member of the ASTP until it was discontinued in March, 1944. He then went to Camp Maxey, Tex., as a member of the 99th infantry division where he qualified as an expert rifleman and went overseas in September, serving in England, France, Belgium and Germany.
Garner, whose parents had just received a cheerful letter from him about receipt of some gift packages on Christmas day, took part with the 35th in the stonewall defense which stopped the Nazis at Monsonau and prevented a complete break-through.
