Betty was passionate about reading throughout her life, learning to love stories and poetry at the knee of her mother, a schoolteacher. She and Fred led Great Books discussion clubs in the 1960s and 1970s, and later led a small group study of spiritual books. Throughout her life Betty collected poems she found meaningful and uplifting, and in 2005, with the help of her husband, the many newspaper cuttings and handwritten copies gathered over 80 years were published in the book Betty's Poems.
Betty also had a deep appreciation for music, and as a young woman taught herself to play hymns on the piano. At age 40, she endeavored to learn to play the flute, with great success, and enjoyed performing in church and at gatherings.
In the mid-1970s, Betty began a long career as a volunteer teacher of English as a Second Language. For over 35 years, she helped dozens learn to understand, speak and read English, and was beloved by her many students.
She and Fred had energetic personalities, allowing them to befriend strangers easily; their social circle constantly expanded throughout their lives. Their generosity and sincere kindness turned many acquaintances into lifelong friendships. Betty's gift of humor and her penetrating insights into the world around us made her an especially entertaining conversationalist. Her desire to understand and learn from others, and to help wherever she found a need were driving forces in her life. Intelligence, wit, compassion and grace were keynotes in her personality; she will be sorely missed by her friends and family.
Betty was preceded in death by two brothers, R. Eddie Robinson and Russell S. Robinson. Her husband Fred passed away in November 2008. Surviving are her three children, four grand-children, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
Burial will be at Berea Cemetery, in Berea KY, by Lakes Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held there by Betty's grandson, Jeremy Grant, on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 1 pm.
