Obit: Leo P. McDermott, 43, lifelong resident of the Kingsley community and well known farmer of this area died following a tractor accident on his farm two miles east and four miles north of Kingsley, Thursday evening, January 15, 1970. Mr. McDermott was clearing snow from a pile of corn preparatory to shelling the following morning when his tractor toppled into the adjacent trench silo, pinning him underneath. The accident happened between four and five that evening. Children riding the St. Michael's School Bus noticed the overturned tractor in the silo, and the O'Keefe children, who live a short ways south, told their father of seeing the overturned tractor as soon as they arrived home. Tom, sensing that there must be something seriously wrong, hurried to the McDermott farm and found Leo pinned underneath. He immediately placed a call to Kingsley for help, including a doctor, ambulance and the Swain wrecker. Farmers who hurried to the scene tried to lift the tractor with another tractor loader but the weight of the big 1750 Oliver with its load was too much. The Swain wrecker lifted the machine and he was placed in the Dickison-Michaelson ambulance, but the injuries he sustained proved to be too severe and Mr. McDermott passed away en route to a Sioux City hospital. Services were held at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kingsley with Rev. Eugene Cepperley officiating. Burial was in St. Michael's cemetery under direction of the Dickison-Michaelson Funeral Home. Casketbearers included Tom O'Keefe, George Wynia, Bob Mockler, Leonard Ford, Ed Coughen and Don Beelner. In respect to the family, school was not held at Kingsley-Pierson the day of the services. Mrs. McDermott is a member of the faculty, teaching kindergarten at the Kingsley building. Leo Patrick McDermott, son of Emmet and Marie (Kimm) McDermott was born March 7, 1926, at Kingsley. He grew up on a farm near Kingsley and graduated from Kingsley High School in 1944. On October 29, 1946, he married Lorraine Nugent at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kingsley. He had farmed here since his marriage. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include the widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emmet McDermott of Kingsley, four daughters, Mary Louise who is a teacher in Ransom, Illinois, Jean attending Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, Debbie and Lisa both at home, four brothers, Michael, Lansing, Kansas, Francis, Worthing, South Dakota, Robert, Kingsley, and Vincent, Alexander, Iowa, four sisters, Mrs. Ben (Loretta) Gotto and Mrs. Paul (Mary Ellen) Gollhofer both of LeMars, Mrs. Dale (Marie Ann) White of Kingsley and Mrs. Donald (Betty Schwebach, Blandinsville, Illinois.
