The son of Burl & Doris Williams, Mike was born April 13, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up in Lamar, Missouri. He played the piano, saxophone, cello and performed in every play in high school, even winning Best Supporting Actor his junior year. Mike graduated from Lamar High School in 1967. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University from 1967-1969 before entering the Navy. After his active duty ended in 1978, Mike entered the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1981 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism. He furthered his education with a Master's in History from the University of Tulsa. He also obtained a Master's in Library Sciences and Information Technologies. From 1980-1991, Mike was in the Naval Reserves. He was a retired Navy veteran & also retired reference librarian.

On May 3, 1969, Mike married Sandra Kay McSpadden. They had two children, Lori Kathryn "Kate" Williams Gastineau Olenski and Nathan Blair Williams. After eleven years, their marriage ended in 1980.

Mike was adopted in 1949 by Burl and Doris Williams in Kansas City at around the age of six months. He was born to Eugene Cumbie and Elnora Shrum Cumbie. He was the third of five children born to the couple. They named him Gary Wayne Cumbie. Mike (Gary) had three brothers and one sister - Larry, Linda, Terry and Tony. He also had half brothers and sisters - Karen, Tina, Eric, Chris, Tom and Jim.

Mike was an incredible person; a family man. His many friends and loving family will always remember his storytelling abilities and intelligence. He was funny, generous and an amazing man. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents,adopted and biological, and a granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Olenski.

Survivors include daughter Lori Kathryn Olenski, son Nathan Williams, brother Charles L. Williams, partner Lance Pillstrom, various brothers and sisters & grandchildren Alison Williams, Jessica Olenski and Drew Williams. Grandson Benjamin Michael Williams was born in August, 2009.
