Nancy Jane Roberts, the daughter of Virgil M. Roberts and Jane Carlisle Roberts, was born in a log cabin on her father's homestead, "Sunnyslope," in Indiana Township, southeast of Pershing, Iowa, on January 1, 1860. Virgil M. Roberts built the house in 1860. The barn goes back to that era, too; it was put together with wooden pegs. The barn was still standing in 2015.

Nancy married Isaac Thomas Maddy on March 10, 1878, at Attica, Marion County, Iowa. They were married for almost 50 years, and had 4 sons and 4 daughters.

In the first decade of the 1900s, the family moved to Stephen, Minnesota, (in the extreme northwestern corner of the state) to farm a large acreage. They were there for only a brief period. It proved to be a disaster. The farmland did not measure up to Iowa's productivity. The weather proved to be unbearable – very hot, very cold, and terribly windy. The oldest daughter, Calinda Jane, had recently married; she and her husband went along. She died giving birth; the baby died also. Disheartened, the family put everything they owned into railroad cars and returned to Iowa. Nancy lived all her life in Iowa with the exception of the time in Minnesota.

Nancy Jane Maddy was a lifelong Methodist. She was steady in faith and a devoted wife and mother.

Nancy Jane Roberts died in a small house on the Roberts Homestead property on August 4, 1927, on the same farmland where she was born, from a stroke of paralysis which occurred on July 28.

Nancy is survived by her children: Jesse Goldsbury "Golie" Maddy, Rosa Lois Maddy McVay, Aura Herman Maddy, Zella May Maddy Simmons, Leo Sylvester Maddy, and Elmer Charles Maddy. She was predeceased by 2 children: Ada Caroline Maddy, who died in infancy; and Calinda Jane Maddy Jones.

Her funeral was August 6, 1927, at the Zion Methodist Episcopal Church. Six of her nephews carried her body to the cemetery in back of the church.
