Ronald R. Niebrugge, 60, of Effingham, passed away at 8 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, at home.

Mr. Niebrugge was born July 17, 1949, at home in rural Effingham, the son of John and Adele (Beckman) Niebrugge. He married Margaret Merry May 28, 1993, and she survives.

He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham. He was a member of Effingham Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 120 and VFW Post 1769, Effingham.

Following graduation from St. Anthony High School in 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two tours in Vietnam. After serving his country, he worked at World Color Press in Effingham for 29 years, then worked as a printing consultant, and was co-owner of Pizza Man in Effingham.

Ron enjoyed the outdoors (especially yard work), was an avid biker and walker, and especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. One of his favorite pastimes was to watch the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium or on television.

Most of all, Ron really enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends. Everyone knew Ron was around by his big, friendly smile and the three claps of his hands.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. Margaret Niebrugge; sons, Ron Jr. (wife, Jennifer), Ryan, Adam (special friend, Shannon), Jack, Jay and Jeff, all of Effingham; grandchildren, Lexie, Madison, and Brendan Niebrugge. He also is survived by his brothers, James (wife, Linda) Niebrugge of Effingham and Dennis (wife, Mary) Niebrugge of Effingham; sisters, Carolyn Niebrugge of Effingham, Jane (husband, Phil) Kortte of Effingham, Marlene (husband, Dennis) Holkenbrink of Louisville, Theresa (husband, Jim) Gaffigan of Rogers, Ark. and JoAnn (husband, Raymond) Jansen of Effingham; mother-in-law, Gwendolyn Merry of Effingham; brother-in-law, Steve Merry of Effingham; and sister-in-law, Gwen (husband Greg) Scheetz of Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Adele Niebrugge; father-in-law, Merrill "Bud" Merry; and brothers-in-law, Jim Merry and Dr. Richard Merry.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham, with funeral Mass following at 6:30 p.m.

Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Effingham at 10:30 a.m. Friday with graveside military rites.
