Colonel Lester was the youngest son of Thomas and Mary "Bessie" Lester. He grew up in Pocahontas, AR and graduated as valedictorian from Pocahontas High School in 1935 at the age of 16. He attended radio school in Kansas City, MO and worked at radio stations in Texas and Louisiana before being hired by Delta Air Lines in 1945. He moved to East Point, GA where he married and raised three daughters. He and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary just two months prior to his death.
