William was the oldest of at least 11 children born 9 months after the wedding of Larkin and Mary 'Polly' Anderson Thompson. On 22 May 1850, he married Martha Malinda Earnest in Blount Co., TN. After the birth of two girls, the family packed up and moved to Greene Co., MO, where at least 8 more children were born. But life was difficult and 5 children died as infants and their oldest daughter died at six yrs. All are buried at Cave Spring.
