Woman Lays Aside Burdens of Life -- Mrs. Hannah Vanderford is Called Beyond -- Woman Who Had Reached Ripe Old Age and Who Had Shared Pioneer Hardships Has Been Called to Eternal Rest --Funeral Held Last Saturday

Mrs. Hannah Vanderford passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Kate Handley of Nemaha, at 10:20 PM Thursday. Mrs. Hannah Vanderford had been an invalid for about 3 1/2 years, but notwithstanding her affliction was cheerful and patient and while her passing was not unexpected, those who knew and loved her felt a deep sense of personal sorrow when the end came and her spirit passed into the world where suffering and pain are unknown. The surviving members of her family have the sincere sympathy of friends and neighbours in their time of sorrow.
Hannah Rains was born at Sonora, Mo. near the site of the present town of Watson, August 24, 1849 and had reached the ripe age of 80 years, 10 months and 16 days. At the age of 11 years she came to Nemaha county, Nebraska with her uncle, George Clark, with whom she made her home, having been left motherless at a tender age. She had lived in Nemaha county almost 70 years. As one of its earliest residents, she had played the part of the pioneer woman and contributed much to the inspiration and encouragement needed by the hardy men and women who laid the foundation for future development.
At the age of 18 years she was united in marriage to William Vanderford and 12 children were born to them. The husband and 5 children preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing, 7 children, William and Alvin of Auburn, John, Clifton and Mrs. Carrie Parriott of Peru, Mrs. Ida Conn of Chadron, Neb and Mrs. Kate Handley of Nemaha. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held from the Handley home in Nemaha Saturday morning with services conducted by Rev. Hagee, pastor of the Christian church at Shubert, and beautiful music was furnished by Fred Gilvert and Mrs. Carrie Kingsolver of Peru. Mrs. Vanderford was a lover of flowers and it was therefore fitting that her friends should have expressed their sorrow through the medium of beautiful floral tributes at her funeral. Following the services the remains were laid to rest beside the grave of her husband in Honey Creek cemetery, of which he was one of the founders and which was one of the first cemeteries to be established in this community.
