Daughter of Elmer Ellsworth Winney and an Iowa school teacher named Miller. Teachers at the time could not be married or have any children and keep their jobs. Elmer's parents Dora and Charles Winney raised her as their own daughter when in fact she was their grandaughter.
Hazel married Raymond Stuart Chapman, Aug. 19, 1921 in Oakland. They had sons Ray Chapman and Darrell Richard Chapman.
