John Newton McIntire was born August 25, 1840, in Kentucky. He was next to the youngest of six children of parents Van S. McIntire, born in Kentucky (1807-1842), and Grace Goodan, born in Indiana (1810-1865). His brothers and sisters were: Washington I. McIntire (1830-1866), Robert E. McIntire (1832-1899), Howard V. McIntire (1834-1912), Sarah Elizabeth Jane McIntire-Scobee (1836-1925), William Garrett McIntire (1839-1859), and Malvina Van McIntire-Peck (1843-1906).
John never married and fought through the Civil War on the Union side. He joined for duty and enrolled October 8, 1861, at Camp Gill, Bath County, Kentucky, at the age of 21. His muster-in date was December 31, 1861, at Camp Temple, Kentucky as Sgt. with Company F, 24th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry Volunteers. He was promoted during the war to 1st Lieutenant; had chronic penumonia during the war, and died December 25, 1865, at the age of 25.
John is buried in the Jones Cemetery, near Midland, Bath County, Kentucky with other McIntire family members.
