Washington I. McIntire was born in Kentucky on Jul 8, 1830 to parents Van S. McIntire, born in Kentucky (1807-1842), and Grace Goodan, born in Indiana (1810-1865).

Washington was the oldest son and had four younger brothers and two sisters:

Robert E. McIntire (1832-1899),
Howard V. McIntire (1834-1912),
Sarah Elizabeth Jane McIntire-Scobee (1836-1925),
William Garrett McIntire (1839-1859),
John Newton McIntire (1840-1865), and
Malvina Van McIntire-Peck (1843-1906).

Washington never married, and fought through the Civil War on the Union Side. He joined for duty and enrolled October 8, 1861 at Camp Gill, Bath County, Kentucky, at the age of 30. His muster-in date was December 31, 1961 at Camp Temple, Kentucky, as 1st Lieutenant with Company B, 24th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry Volunteers. He was wounded at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia, on May 14, 1864. After the war, he returned to Kentucky, and according to an article in the Fleming County Dispatch, Flemingsburg, Kentucky, dated Saturday, May 19, 1866, "Difficulty at Mt Sterling. On Saturday, May 12, 1866, an altercation ensued between Wash McIntire, of Mud Lick, and O. B. Duke, of Mt. Sterling, in which McIntire was killed by a pistol shot from Duke."

Washington is buried in the Jones Cemetery, Bath County, Kentucky, with other family members.
