Mrs. Mary Carpenter Tipton, 55, of Rt. 4, wife of Philip Scott Tipton, died Sunday, Oct. 7. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late James Morton Carpenter and the late Elizabeth White Carpenter. She was a retired U.S. Army Nurse, having served during the Vietnam Conflict, a registered Nurse with Easley Baptist Hospital, was the founder of the Support Group for Alzhelmer's Disease in Easley, was a graduate of Easley High School, the Mercy School of Nursing, Clemson University and received her masters degree from the University of South Carolina. She also had taught at Clemson University, had worked at Marshall Pickens Hospital in Greenville, had worked for the Pickens County Health Dept, and was a member of St. Matthias Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her husband of the home; daughters Stephanie Elizabeth Tipton and Heather Lee Irwin both of the home; one grandson, brothers Jim Carpenter of Hackberry, La., John Carpenter of Madisonville, Tenn., and Joe Carpenter of Spartanburg.
Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Charles Fritz. Burial in Fairview Methodist Church Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzhelmer's Association, Upstate South Carolina, Chapter, 200 McGee Rd., Anderson, SC 29621. Robinson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
