Feb. 12, 1929 - July 1, 2009

A graveside service will be held for Virginia Lee Hooker, 80, of North Bend, formerly of Springfield, at 11 a.m. Friday, July 10, at West Lawn Memorial Park, 225 S. Danebo Ave., Eugene with the Rev. Randy Wood officiating. A private family viewing will be held at North Bend Chapel.

Virginia was born Feb. 12, 1929, in Gainesville, Mo., daughter of Adam and Florence (Chatham) Upton. She died July 1, 2009, in Coos Bay, of causes related to Alzheimer's disease.

She moved with her family at an early age to California, where she attended school in Lindsay. At the age of 14, she met a U.S. Navy sailor, Burl Hooker, who was to become the love of her life. She waited for him during his tour of duty during World War II. They were married Nov. 20, 1945, in California following Burl's discharge from the Navy at the end of the war. They were married 57 years until Burl's death in 2002. Virginia and Burl had two children, Victoria and Robert and moved to Oregon in 1961. They lived in Cottage Grove, Eugene and Springfield, where Virginia was a homemaker and worked for many years as a retail sales clerk. She enjoyed the ocean, camping, flowers and her grandchildren. Virginia remained in Springfield following Burl's death until 2007, when she moved to Coos Bay and lived in a memory care center until her death.

Virginia is survived by her two children, Victoria Davis and husband, Harry of North Bend and Bob Hooker and wife, Carol of Creswell; two siblings, Nadine Sundsmo of Cottage Grove and Robert Upton and wife, Judy of Creswell; four grandchildren, Kim Fairbank and Chris Davis and wife, Tonya all of North Bend, Jason Hooker and wife, Mara of Eugene and Jeffrey Hooker of Creswell; and four great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jordan Fairbank and Cooper and Lexi Davis all of North Bend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister, Shirley Thomas.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 1238 Lincoln St., Eugene, OR 97401 or volunteer or visit memory care residents.

Arrangements are under the direction of North Bend Chapel, 756-0440.
