Retired comptroller, WWII prisoner of war
Harry E. Albertson, 83, of Sea Isle City, N.J., a retired comptroller and World War II prisoner of war, died Aug. 1 at Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Point, N.J.
Born in Darby, he was a resident of Colwyn before moving permanently to Sea Isle City, his summer home, in 1997. Mr. Albertson spent his winters in Moultrie Oaks, St. Augustine, Fla.
The valedictorian of his class at the old Darby High School, Mr. Albertson graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia. He was comptroller for Hygrade Baking, the manufacturing division of Food Fair Stores and Tetley Tea, and was also formerly employed as regional manager of Bond Bread.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he achieved the rank of captain while serving in the 106th Division 422nd Infantry H Company. Mr. Albertson was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and held prisoner by the Nazis in stalags 9B, 13B and 7A until he escaped with the Ill-Fated Baum Expedition.
He was a member of the Battle of the Bulge Chapter of Goshen, the Tri-State Ex-POW Group and the Senior Citizens Association of Colwyn. Mr. Albertson was formerly chairman of the Darby Creek Joint Sewer Authority.
Survivors: Wife, Gladys Meyers Albertson; sons, Richard H. Albertson of Little Rock, Ark., John R. Albertson of St. Augustine, Fla.; two grandchildren
