Benjamin Perry Kelley was named after a well known local attorney and politician Benjamin Franklin Perry of Greenville. After the War Between the States Benjamin Perry became Governour of South Carolina. According to Benjamin P. Kelley's death certificate he died of ruptured appendicitis.

Ben and his siblings were raised by their mother, Frances Kelley (1824-1905), daughter of Daniel Calloway Kelley. In all the U.S. Federal Census records that I have researched, she was not married.

His wife was Matilda Caroline Sheriff (1855-1931), daughter of John Sheriff and Sarah Gambrell.
Speculation and documents lean towards a John Richardson, as being the father of all of Frances' six children. John was a son of Mathias Richardson, Jr.
