Neal's father Payson farmed. Neal himself farmed and later started a dairy, probably 1933 or 1934. He also raised turkeys for awhile.
His education probably ended about 4th grade. he lived in Arkansas untill he was 9 so that is evidently where he went to rural school.
Neal was an expert wrestler in his younger days. He was talked into boxing wiyh a local first-rate boxer. He didn't fare so well--received a broken nose for his effort. Consequently, he got a reputation as "rough-n-tough" or "wild". Anyhow, when Lula wanted to date Him, her parents were not in favor of her going with such a person. They agreed she could, only if she went in the company of Ralph and Florence who were dating at the time.
Neal and Lula had another problem when they were dating. They did eventully get rid of his brother and her sister, but little brother Harry thought he should go everywhere his big sister did. I think sometimes they took him, but I imagine they managed to escape without him when they wanted to.
Neal and Lula were married on January 2, 1918 at the Methodist Parsonage by Rev. John Endacott. She was 19 and he was 27. For their honeymoon, they rode the train to Oklahoma to visit Uncle Ralph, who was in the army and was ill with pneimonia. Aunt Florence went with them. She and Ralph had not yet married, but she wanted to visit him.
