J.J. Allen, 112, Dies at Davis

Murray county's oldest citizen, and perhaps the state's oldest, J.J. Allen, aged 112 years, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home in this city after an illness of several weeks.

About a month ago he was stricken with an illness which was pronounced influenza, and he never was able to recover.

The funeral was held at the family home at 3 p.m. today, Rev. West, Primitive Baptist pastor of Purcell, officiating.

John Junior Allen was born on the line between Tennessee and Mississippi on Aug. 9th, 1824, according to the family record. At the age of four years he started with his parents to Alabama. On the steamship both his father and mother contracted cholera and died, and he was taken in charge by a family in Alabama named Nelson who adopted and raised him.

Becoming 21 years old Mr. Allen went to Texas and years later became a volunteer Indian scout. Since 1919 he has lived in and around Davis and Sulphur, and has resided in Davis the past seven years. Most of his life was devoted to farming. During the civil war he served as a member of Young's cavalry, enlisting at Gainesville.

Mr. Allen was trice married. Surviving children from his first marriage are Mrs. Steve Monroe, Antlers, Okla.; Mrs. Lillie Chester, Bennington, Okla.; Tom Allen, Wade, Okla.; and Miss Cordelia Logan, Okla. City.

His wife and two children from his second marriage survive, namely: Mrs. Lillie Hudson, Ardmore, and T. Allen, California; also two step-children, Mrs. Minnie Martin and Tom Hensley, both of Davis.

Mr. Allen surely was "father to the fatherless," since he reared 43 orphan children, none of whom was related to him.

For a man of his age he had wonderful vigor and health, and it was only recently that he showed signs of failing. His ability to wait on himself, walk to town, do odd jobs, etc, in spite of his advanced years – all was a marvel to his friends. An odd fact about his life was that he had cut his third set of teeth and started on his fourth.

His was a wonderful life. He attained an age that few men do. He filled his life with many deeds of kindness and showed a great sense of human sympathy. Peace to his memory.
