Major Lowry was a member of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Air Demonstration
Team. While practicing for an upcoming air show at Indian Springs Air Force
Auxiliary Field 60 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada, tragedy struck when the
lead plane experienced a jammed stabilizer and all four jets in the tight
formation struck the desert floor at nearly 400 miles-per-hour. Major Norman
Lowry III, Captain William Mays , Captain Joseph "Pete" Peterson and Captain Mark Melancon were all killed instantly.
It was the worse accident to befall the precision demonstration team since it
was formed twenty-eight years earlier.
