Mary Emily Papandria "Emmy Lou"
Nov. 15, 1925 - June 6, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Mary Emily was born November 15, 1925 in Dayton Ohio to Charles Robert "Bob" and Margaret (Osborn) Egry. Although Baptized Mary Emily, she was known all her life as Emmy Lou, a nickname chosen from one of her mother's favorite childhood books. A lifelong devoted Catholic, Emmy Lou attended parochial schools in Lafayette, IN and Detroit, MI, and graduated from St. Joseph Academy, South Bend in 1943. After graduation and a year at St. Mary's College she worked at the Studebaker Defense Plant. Soon after, she entered the community of the Holy Cross Sisters and for six years she studied and taught grade school. In 1951 she returned to her family home. She worked for Travelers' Insurance for a short while, but then left to become the first secretary, and along with her mother, one of the founding members of the Logan School for the Mentally Challenged, in which they were both active for many years thereafter.

In September 1952 she married Peter Papandria at Holy Cross Church in South Bend. Together they raised four children who survive her, daughter Margaret and husband Patrick Madden of Choctaw, OK; son Joseph Peter and Wife Michele Kochmar of Indianapolis, IN and grandson Nicholas and wife Jessica Deboy and great-granddaughter Vivian Jane of Muncie; daughter Mary Madeline and granddaughter Elizabeth; and son John Robert and wife Ruth Tieken and grandchildren Cameron, Emily, and Ryan of Indianapolis. She is also survived by a brother, James Lawrence Egry and wife Nellie, their sons, Andrew and Patrick of California, niece Diane O'Riley Gudat and family, nephews Dennis and James O'Riley and many in-laws in the South Bend area, Josephine Bamber, Anthony and George Papandria and Jenny Andrea of New York City, niece Josephine (Sissy) Elliot, nephew Dennis Bamber, Anthony, Jr., Robert and David Papandria, and many other nieces and nephews to numerous to mention.

Emmy Lou was predeceased by her parents and younger sister, Mary Denise O'Riley. During her life Emmy Lou worked as a typist, helping many students and professors at Notre Dame in the preparation of dissertations, theses, and books. She served many different departments and programs as well. For many years she served Christ the King Church in different capacities. She was organist and choir director, taught classroom music in the school, was a substitute teacher in the school, taught Sunday School, and was an active and involved member of the PTA. Through most of the 1970's during the transition time after Vatican II, She was the Director of Religious Education for the entire parish, a difficult but satisfying work and one she cherished. For several decades until her recent semi-retirement she was the secretary and assistant to Rev. Robert S. Pelton, C.S.C., who will be officiating her Mass of Christian Burial. In addition to helping him publish several books, she also served in many capacities for the Notre Dame University Institute for Clergy Education. As a hobby, she spent many years doing the genealogy research for all five of her family lines. From this work she prepared a family history book for each line and shared these with all the persons and families mentioned in the book. She was a voracious reader, often reading several books a week. Whodunits were her favorites, and she also loved doing crossword puzzles (she could do the Sunday paper puzzle in ink) and putting together jig saw puzzles. She was a long-time member of the Circle of Mercy Daycare Center, assuming many of the elected offices. Later she became a member of the Corvilla Auxiliary in which she was active until her death. One of the greatest joys in her later life was the privilege of being allowed to sing in the choir at the Church of Loretto on the campus of St. Mary's College.

Her life will be celebrated with a Mass of Resurrection at the Church of Loretto on the St. Mary's campus at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 11th. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery, 61300 U.S. 31. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 10th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. where a parish rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to 3231 Sugar Maple Ct., South Bend, IN, 46628 or Logan Community Resources, Inc., 2502 E.
