Ludwig Thaddeus Caldwell was born to parents, William Alexander Caldwell Sr. and Mary Samuels. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree from St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina. He later taught there as a Professor in music. He succumbed to his injuries after a bad fall in North Carolina then brought to St. Augustine, Florida to bury next to his immediate family members. His Deaf father was the nation's first known Black Deaf teacher (career began in Alabama) and principal (Florida).
