BREWSTER - Ardis Hertford, 91, died Thursday of cancer.

She was the wife of Hayes Hertford, who died in 1985. They were married for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Hertford was born in Sherburn, Minn., and attended Glendale High School in Glendale Calif., where she was the student body president in 1932. She attended UCLA from 1932 to 1934.

She was a homemaker.

She lived in Glendale from 1920 to 1935 and moved to Riverside, Calif., from 1935 to 1971. In 1971 she moved to Lihue, Hawaii. Later, she lived in Ojai, Calif., from 1983 to 2002, before moving to Brewster.

She was a watercolor artist who won numerous awards and prizes and served as a member of the resident's council at EPOCH Assisted Living at Brewster Place, where she lived.

She enjoyed reading, volunteering, cooking, painting and spending time with her family.

Survivors include a son, Reed Hertford of Chatham; a daughter, Sara Beeby of Ojai, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late Bruce Hertford.
