As a member of the U.S. Navy, March 1941 to August 1945, Louie participated in many actions in the Pacific, Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II. He also received the Purple Heart Award. He attended Northrup Institute of Technology and Los Angeles Community Colleges, 1959-1961.
Louie's passion for airplanes began when he was a young boy, and remained a lifelong constant. Many were the damaged planes that he rebuilt and flew. He retired from Western Airlines in October of 1984.
Another longterm hobby was to explore Mayan Indian ruins in Mexico and Central America. The numerous trips shared with relatives and friends supply rich memories and knowledge for each one of us. During his years of declining health, his grandchildren, whom he adored, were his love and joy.
Survived by his wife, Maurene E. Rasmussen Alserda; children: Diane A. Martinez (Anthony), Lawrence P. Alserda (Eva), Laurel A. Thorum (Mark) and Calvin L. Alserda, 83/4 grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude Flitton and Grace Wilson. Preceded in death by brother, Pete Alserda.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 8, 2 p.m., in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary Chapel, 10600 South 1700 East, where friends may call Friday evening, 7-9 p.m., and on Saturday, one hour prior to the services.
Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens.
Don't cry at my grave
cause I won't be there
I'll be in the breeze
that ruffles in your hair.
I'll be in the sunshine
I'll be in the snow
I'll be in the places
Where we used to go.
I'll be in your laughter
and in funny things
I'll be in your shadow
and there in your dreams.
I'll be in your greeting
but not your goodbyes
I'll be in the reflection
of your loving eyes.
I'll always be with you
And I'll always care
So don't cry at my graveside
cause I won't be there.
