AGED LUTHERAN MINISTER DIES
Rev Henry Juengel Former Pastor of Zion’s Church, is No More
WAS 82 YEARS OF AGE
Following an illness of several months, due to the infirmities of age and intensified by the shock of the death of his loved wife, just four months before, Rev Henry Juengel, former pastor of Zion Lutheran church, in this city, died at 4:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the residence of a daughter, Mrs William Kamm, 1513 East Lewis street, at the age of 82 years. He served for twelve years as the pastor of Zion’s congregation, retiring twelve years ago when he reached the age of 70 years.
Rev Mr Juengel was born and reared in Germany, coming as a young man of 21 years to America and soon thereafter to Fort Wayne. Here, as a member of St Paul’s Lutheran church, he formed the acquaintance of Rev Dr William Sihler, then pastor of the church, and a man whose name is indelibly stamped upon the history of the Lutheran faith in Fort Wayne. They became fast friends and as a result the young man determined to enter the ministry. He spent much of his time with Dr Sihler pursuing his studies later attending Concordia college and completing his theological education in St Louis.
In February 1887, Rev Mr Juengel was called as pastor of Zion Lutheran congregation in this city, which had been organized four years prior to that time and he remained at its head until July, 1899, a period of twelve years, in the course of which there was marked growth and prosperity in the church in the eastern part of the city. Rev Mr Juengel was a man of marked ability and of exalted character who was widely known and universally held in the highest esteem. He is survived by eight children-Rev Herman Juengel, Cairo, Mich; Mrs E Eusdenberg, Lincoln, Kan; Mrs H Meier, Lincoln, Kan; Mrs William Kamm, Fort Wayne; Mrs EG Juengel, Orange, Kan, TO Juengel and Mrs William Meyer, Chicago.
The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock from the residence and at 1:45 from Zion Lutheran church, Rev Ch Luehr officiating. The Fort Wayne Sentinel - March 13, 1911
