After his retirement from Standard Oil in 1919 he and Mayor Joseph P. Dosch of Caldwell, N.J. formed Dosch-King Co. road contractors, opening a plant in Whippany, N.J. Mr. King continued business until his illness. He was New Jersey's first asphault salesman.
Mr. King was active in civic affairs but refused to seek public office. For 20 years at his Bradley Beach home was the gathering place of Demorcratic and Republican leaders and others in politics. He was a close friend of City Commissioner Brennan and the late John R. Flavell, former sheriff of Essex County.
He was the high chief ranger of Court George A. Halsey, Independant Order of Forresters, a post he held for a quarter of a century. For his charitable work. the Supreme Court of the order made him emeritus high chief ranger. He was also a member of Mgr. Doane Assembly, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus, Newark Lodge of Elks, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Holy Name Society, Union Club, Maplewood Country Club, Richardson Benevolent Association and several political clubs.
He was married to his beloved wife, the former Rose C. Smith for 42 years, with whom he had two children, Mary J. Savannah and James F. King, and adopted one nephew, John D. King and two nieces, Mary T. Smith and Margaret M. Peter of his late brother, John J. King.
