Aunt Kate grew up on the South Side of Chicago. She was married to James Gidney and they had 6 children. James died in 1931. After that Kate met William "John" Bussa and together they raised those six and had two more sons.
They were a typical family in the Back of the Yards section of the city. The children grew up in the neighborhood where they were born.
Aunt Kate was a good cook and would feed the whole neighborhood. I learned how to do a pit barbecue at their house. We had to shuck corn on the cob and wrap it in aluminum foil to be put in the pit with the potatoes and meat. Some of the best times I had as a kid were when I was hanging out at Aunt Kate's house.
